The Community Action Committee includes the Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention committee and the Family of the Month committee.
The Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention committee’s activities change with the interest of the members. Actions have included: a speaker at a club meeting, redecorating a DV crises center, creating a children’s Take A Book library at The Women’s Center (TWC) in Waukesha, creating and providing patient sexual assault kits for a DV crises center, helping TWC clients furnish their apartment when leaving TWC, and more.
Family of the Month committee gives a helping hand to families in Waukesha County. Working with Waukesha County Child & Family Services, Safe Babies Healthy Families, The Women’s Center, and Family Promise, “our” families are often leaving a homeless situation or leaving a domestic violence situation, all are in need of kindness, hope, and a little help. We receive a list of needed household items, then email a newsletter to caring individuals and organizations in the community on the items needed to help the family create a home.
OJWC is a 501c3 non-profit. All donations receive a tax donation slip.

GFWC OJWC took over FOM in late 2012 from Volunteers of Lake Country. A brief re-cap of the past 2+ years (through 2014):
•Worked with 41 families, and set up People Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (PADA)’s new family meeting room. •Set up 44 children’s beds and 8 parent’s beds (with sheets, warm comforters, and new pillows for each). •Provided 12 new Crock Pots (started in 2014) to help the parents feed their families easy, healthy, inexpensive meals. (48 Crock Pots were funded specifically by several community donors!). •Donated $17,000+ in household items to families, from bath towels to couches. •1,265+ hours volunteered by OJWC members, husbands, kids, and friends of OJWC. •Received donations from individuals and organizations, with Oconomowoc’s Our Saviors Lutheran Church’s Lent and Easter benevolence collection (twice!) being a huge part of our success, especially in providing beds for children.
In our 2+ years, we have experienced so much. Deep appreciation for our help. Both quiet and exuberant joy as the children watched (and often helped) us set up their beds with beautiful, warm comforters. The tears of a Mom (whose husband works 3 jobs) as we brought in boxes of food in addition to furniture and beds for their two little ones (thank you to the mobile Feeding America team!).
We have the best “job” ever.
A Family Services Caseworker wrote "...it is a magical thing to behold the look on a child's face when he or she sees their new bed complete with decorative sheets, fluffy comforters and pillows that they may never have had before...and when all the pieces are moved in, the volunteers depart as unobtrusively as they arrived, having significantly touched the lives of people they will likely never meet again...Families are overwhelmed and extremely grateful for this special opportunity to make a home for their children...confirmation that there are angels living among us. This group has made a substantial difference in the lives of so many in Waukesha County and are viewed as heroes by agency staff."
